Heat Insulating Materials

Heat Insulating Materials

Heat insulating materials are distinguished by low thermal conductivity and low stored heat. By the use of insulating materials the energy consumption of a furnace can be decreased and the outside wall temperature optimized. Lightweight materials with low specific heat are ideal choices for plants with periodic operating conditions to shorten the colt-to-cold cycle.

The standard heat insulating materials are classified as insulating refractory bricks, plates, insulating castables and ceramic fibre materials.

The thermal conductivity of the materials does not only depend on the total porosity but also on pore size and mineralogical composition. Innovative aggregates based on CA offer reduced thermal conductivity when compared to aggregates with comparable densities and micro-porous heat-insulating materials can have a thermal conductivity – especially at elevated temperatures- even below the conductivity of air.
